In April 2019, we held our third STEMM SEN meeting, kindly hosted by Dr Laura Hobbs at the University of the West of England. As always the passion, energy and determination of the group left us feeling so inspired!
The topic for discussion was how the STEMM community can improve the recruitment and retention of disabled people. We broke down the recruitment process (from the applicants viewpoint) and looked at the challenges facing a disabled applicant. We then worked on ways in which organisations can improve this and make their recruitment process far more accessible as well as far more attractive to the huge untapped pool of talent in the disabled community.
Some fantastic progress was made, and we have created some great resources from this work. We hope to share them here on the website shortly.
Big thanks to all who came – Royal Astronomical Society, UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres, The Primary Science Teaching Trust, Science from the Start, Aerospace Bristol, University of Strathclyde, Centre for Life, and The Royal Society.
