Following an overwhelming response to our CEO’s speech at the Royal Society’s Diversity conference, we chaired a STEMM SEN roundtable in 2018, bringing together 21 attendees from all the major Science associations. These included The Royal Society, UK Association for Science & Discovery Centres, London Zoological Society, Sense About Science and Employment Autism amongst others. Subsequently, the group met for a second time in November at The Zoological Society for another lively, engaging and valued session with direct outcomes benefiting all attendees. Discussions focused on evaluation techniques with lots of great ideas shared and best practice tips exchanged
These meetings clearly show that there is a real need for an established network with acentral connectorto break down barriers to STEMM SEN inclusion. Although there is a lot of small-scale grass roots level work taking place, many organisations identified the need for central co-ordination, signposting and support. We are excited to lead this network to share best practice, raise awareness, train and inform so that together the network empower the STEMM SEN community.
