Technology Work Inspiration Trip to UWE DETI

On Thursday 21st March 2024, five 16-19 year old students from a school in Gloucestershire joined us at UWE DETI for a Technology-themed Work Inspiration Trip.

The Visual Timetable for the Work Inspiration Trip to UWE DETI, created using Widgit Symbols

Josh, Education Coordinator, gave an introduction about engineering and digital engineering. He presented the group with a problem to solve (fox, chicken and grain crossing the river), which the group cracked effectively. He then asked how they might use technology and engineering to solve the problem in a different way.

The students were then given the opportunity to create, build and problem solve within minecraft. Josh encouraged the group to think of a problem faced in the city, such as overcrowding, lack of green space, the climate crisis etc. and build something to help with that issue. This involved thinking about what resources were available, and using creative thinking to solve the problem - skills which are needed in engineering.

One student “built a bridge of ice, which will allow the cars to go faster and also slowly cool the city helping with global warming”!

The group were introduced to a robot and had a chance to see it in action, talking to Josh and moving its head around, tracking his movements.

The group were then given a tour of the Engineering building, including the digital engineering, structural engineering, electrical engineering, and robotics labs.
