sen in stem network

Special Educational Needs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

Lightyear Foundation founded the SEN in STEM Network in 2018 in response to huge demand and appetite for a central forum to discuss all things inclusivity within the sector, hosting regular roundtable events and workshops.

We have over 250 members, spanning leading science institutions like The Royal Society, membership organisations such as The Royal Astronomical Society, science centres including the Association for Science & Discovery Centres, charities like WECIL, government bodies such as the Ministry of Defence, individuals working within STEM, and corporates like Airbus.

Our network is exciting, innovative and influential in breaking down barriers. Members come together to collectively share best practice, raise awareness of the issues, and receive training and techniques. Together, the network works to empower the SEN in STEM community, get more disabled people interacting with STEM and break down the barriers employers face to becoming more accessible.

We have hosted a variety of in-person and virtual sessions, including events at the Home Office and London Zoo! Topics covered have included communication, language and terminology, impacts and response to Covid-19, and evaluation techniques, and we have heard some brilliant talks by guest speakers. Members come away from our roundtables and workshops feeling energised and inspired to introduce more inclusion into their organisational practices.

The SEN in STEM Network is free to join. Members receive invitations for events and post-event resources, access to a LinkedIn group to share news and information, and the opportunity to connect and network with others working in improving accessibility within STEM.

‘Lightyear Foundation offers a wealth of reliable information, advice and practical steps on improving our engagement with a wider scope of society. Their help has been crucial in giving both myself and my organisation the confidence to move forward in this field and broaden our educational offer and create impact within SEN communities.’ Joe Burton, Education & Public Engagement Manager, The Linnean Society of London

‘I have to say it’s a real pleasure to be involved with this group. A real rich mix of sectors and professionals sharing experiences and inspiring practice. I initially didn’t have the knowledge and I wouldn’t claim to be an expert now, but what this group did was welcome me in and allow me listen, question and learn about barriers and solutions I just hadn’t considered. My confidence and knowledge around SEN continues to grow and it has been an inspiration to learn from, and with, this group. Like everyone else, I learn every time we meet.’ David Jones, International Centre for Life
